Welcome to Chris
Lage's website!
I'm
a graduate student in the School of Marine Sciences at the University
of Maine & a research assistant in the lab of Dr. Irv Kornfield,
a professor of Biological Sciences. The Kornfield lab is involved with
many projects using molecular techiques to answer basic biological questions.
My
current research involves the use of genetics to investigate the population
biology of marine organisms in the Gulf of Maine. Image
& video link to below picture obtained from http://oracle.er.usgs.gov/GoMaine/.
Population level projects which
I am working on include investigations of stock structuring of commercially
important marine fish in the Northwest Atlantic such as haddock
and Atlantic salmon. Our laboratory
is currently evaluating kinship among finback whales in the Gulf of Maine
using DNA markers and has provided fundamental insights into the population
biology of many other marine species from herring to lobster.
In
an effort to aid the Maine Inland Fish & Wildlife Service, Dr. Kornfield
has established the Univerity of Maine Molecular Forensics Laboratory
which is used to provide DNA analyses in wildlife cases involving forensic
identitification of game. In addition, our lab is investigating population
structuring among deer and moose populations throughout New England.
Evolutionary
projects include the molecular reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships
using DNA sequence data. Such investigations include the phylogenetic reconstruction
of a family of crustaceans called cumaceans and the use of microsatellite
markers to gain insight into the rapid speciation of East African cichlids.
